Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of Canopy Practice Success. I’m your host, Canopy Host, Director of Product Marketing here at Canopy.

Today’s episode is a special one. We’re joined by Darren Root, CPA and nationally recognized thought leader who has been transforming the accounting profession for decades. He’s the author of The E-Myth Accountant and has helped thousands of firm owners redesign their businesses to serve their lives, not the other way around.

Darren, I’m excited to talk about your new book.

(00:45) Darren Root
Thanks for having me. I practiced for many years and then started a company called Rootworks, which became one of the largest firm improvement organizations in the country.

(01:02) Canopy Host
You were really on the cutting edge of consulting in this space.

(01:02) Darren Root
Yes, this was before social media made everyone a consultant. At the time, there were only a few groups focused on firm improvement, and we were early in that space.

My goal was to work with small to mid-sized accounting firms, which make up the majority of the market. One thing that helped shape my perspective was serving as executive editor of CPA Practice Advisor for about seven years. That gave me exposure to both the technology vendors and thousands of firms.

(01:59) Canopy Host
That depth of experience really shows in your writing.

(02:54) Canopy Host
There’s something powerful about being able to articulate ideas clearly in a book, not just in short-form content. It allows people to truly understand and apply concepts.

(03:07) Darren Root
My first book was co-authored with Michael Gerber, The E-Myth Accountant, which was life-changing for me. Later, I wrote The Intentional Accountant, and then co-authored Utility for Accountants with Jay Baer, which focused on content marketing before it became mainstream.

Now, The Simple Firm is really the culmination of everything I’ve learned over 35 years—practicing, working with firms, and understanding what actually drives meaningful change.

(05:51) Canopy Host
There’s so much noise today. Slowing down to really learn and think is more important than ever.

(06:15) Darren Root
Exactly. There’s constant noise—social media, content, distractions. But if you don’t step back and ask what you’re actually trying to accomplish, you get stuck.

I was heavily influenced by Stephen Covey and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I even facilitated that program for 10 years. That framework taught me to step back and think intentionally about what I wanted to build.

(07:51) Canopy Host
That idea shows up in your book, especially around burnout.

(08:07) Darren Root
Yes. A big driver of burnout is a lack of freedom.

In The Simple Firm, I define professional freedom in four parts:

  • Freedom of time
  • Freedom of money
  • Freedom of relationships
  • Freedom of purpose

Most firms lack these, which leads to stress, overwork, and dissatisfaction.

(11:00) Canopy Host
What gets in the way of achieving that?

(11:00) Darren Root
It starts with a weak business model.

Most firms don’t clearly define:

  • What they offer
  • Who they serve
  • How they deliver it

Instead, they try to serve everyone, which creates complexity and inefficiency.

(11:49) Darren Root
For example, I wasn’t good at nonprofit work, construction accounting, or audits. So I narrowed my focus to what I was good at and the types of clients I wanted to serve.

That clarity is critical.

(13:01) Canopy Host
Where does “why” fit into this?

(13:01) Darren Root
Your “why” is your purpose—it’s not your business model, but it drives it.

Most firms start out just trying to make money. But they never step back to redefine their purpose, and that’s where they get stuck.

(15:40) Darren Root
Owners get caught in deadlines and day-to-day work without ever reassessing what they want their business to be.

That leads to burnout for both the owner and the team.

(16:32) Canopy Host
So how do you break out of that cycle?

(17:40) Darren Root
It starts with stepping back and asking:

  • What kind of life do I want?
  • What kind of business supports that?

Then you evaluate what’s not working.

Often, it’s:

  • Too many wrong-fit clients
  • Lack of time
  • Poor focus

From there, you start making changes—slowly but intentionally.

(20:24) Darren Root
For me, I would take time each year to step away and reflect—writing, thinking, and asking hard questions.

You have to do that work to figure out what you really want.

(21:32) Canopy Host
There’s never been a better time to do that, especially with today’s technology.

(22:31) Darren Root
Absolutely.

We’re no longer in a world of paper files and manual processes. Today, I believe up to 85 percent of tax, payroll, and accounting work can be automated before a human even gets involved.

That frees up time for higher-value work.

(24:42) Canopy Host
But that also requires a shift in mindset.

(25:33) Darren Root
It does. Many accountants tie their value to production—hours worked or output completed.

But real value comes from impact, not just activity.

(27:03) Darren Root
There’s also been a cultural mindset of long hours as a badge of honor.

But that’s changing—and it needs to.

(29:02) Darren Root
At the end of the day, this is about building a business that supports your life, not consumes it.

(29:30) Canopy Host
Let’s wrap with a quick rapid-fire.

What’s a workday ritual you never skip?

(29:59) Darren Root
Coffee with my wife in the morning, in front of the fireplace.

(30:10) Canopy Host
What’s one service you’ll never offer again?

(30:14) Darren Root
Running an accounting firm. I love the profession, but I get more fulfillment helping firms than operating one.

(30:34) Canopy Host
A great client is someone who…

(30:34) Darren Root
…is a good fit and does the things you need them to do.

(30:43) Canopy Host
Darren, thank you so much. The Simple Firm is out now—go grab a copy.

(31:07) Darren Root
Thanks, I really enjoyed it.
