Course Description

The IRS assesses millions of dollars of penalties against taxpayers daily. Many of those penalties can be abated due to quality representation. This course is Part 2 of a comprehensive 2-part series intended to help you understand and become savvy with the IRS tax penalty abatement program. It gives you all the detail that the Penalty Abatement Basics & Techniques course doesn’t cover. There are a growing number of penalty provisions today—over 100 and climbing—related to tax payment problems.

In this course, we will:

  • Review some of the basics, including an overview of tax penalties.
  • Teach how penalties are calculated correctly.
  • Dive into the types of tax penalty abatement techniques, including First Time Abate, which can involve just a quick phone call, and Reasonable Cause, which can involve written and oral requests to the IRS and a taxpayer interview

To further your understanding, we will follow a couple of cases in depth through the penalty abatement process, so you get a hands-on feel for how you would use first-time abatement techniques and reasonable cause, methods to formulate your request, and the letters and samples, showing what the process looks like from start to finish. Then we help you understand the best strategies to use with each of these techniques. In addition to understanding the initial application, you’ll also learn important processes for appealing a decision if your initial requests are denied, including a last resort appeal in court. If you want all the details that a basic course can’t cover, this course is for you!
